Angus Naismith – Gap year volunteer on HIV grants programme, Ngaramtoni, TanzaniaI’ve spent the last month in Ngaramtoni working on a livelihood grant programme that aims to help families affected by HIV/AIDS. Grants range from £30 to £75 and give entrepreneurs the opportunity to start up simple businesses, allowing them to be self-sufficient and to care for their family.

My role is to interview recipients of the grants and analyse why their businesses have succeeded or failed. I’ve had a great time so far and learnt a lot. The project is fantastic and I really enjoy working in the local community and sharing their unique perceptions on life and business. I’ve learnt so much about local culture, which is one of the things that makes a gap year project so worthwhile.

One thing that’s definitely worth applauding is how well the project is run. I was given responsib
