Education box project and engagement at Neel Kamal school.

In the last week of November the government of Himachal Pradesh ordered the shut down of schools to contain the spread of coronavirus. Considering the previous success of education boxes as a remote learning tool, the Principal at Neel Kamal School requested a second round of education boxes. This month, we have been working in collaboration with the school from the lowest grade up to grade 10, to increase the students engagement in learning.

This month we also visited our partner schools to understand their challenges of remote learning education and receive feedback on the impact of education boxes previously distributed. It’s very important that we continue to connect with our partner schools to support them during this time. A major challenge faced by schools is that students generally come from a poor background and therefore have no access to smart phones, which limits their engagement in remote learning.

We have seen a positive impact from our education boxes, with 96% of students engaging with the resources providing, completing and submitting workshops. This compares to 42% who were engaging with the online learning material.

Community updates – Diwali (festival of light).

In the month of November Hindus celebrate the most important festival Diwali which is called a festival of lights. Diwali is celebrated to honor Lord Ram. On this day Lord Ram returned to his home after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons king, Ravana. People celebrate this festival by illuminating the interior and exterior of their homes with diyas(oil lamps) and rangoli (art made from coloured sand), perform worship ceremony of goddess Lakshmi, light fireworks and partake in family feasts where sweets and gifts are shared.
